The United States Department of the Treasury suspended sanctions against the company Rusal on Monday, April 23, following suspicions of poisoning in Russia in connection with the Skripal case involving former Russian agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia.
The US sanctions against Russian oligarchs, including aluminium magnate Oleg Deripaska, had shaken the global aluminium market.
In its statement, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) “authorizes Rusal or any other entity in which it owns, directly or indirectly, a 50% or greater interest.”
This decision will allow Rusal to regain its footing after its shares plunged on the stock market. It will also help accelerate the resumption of operations at the Rusal-Friguia plant, which has been shut down since the 2012 strike.
